Description

The Chamber Choir Caedonia from Sibiu, Romania would like to invite you to its 40th Anniversary Concert "Iată vin colindătorii..." featuring traditional Romanian carols as well as other religious and folkloric songs.

In 1968, a group of young graduates of the Faculty of Music from Cluj Napoca came to Sibiu and founded the Chamber Choir of the Trade Unions' House of Culture in Sibiu. Mr. Florin Soare took over the lead of the choir in 1980. He is a graduate of the “Gheorghe Dima” Faculty of Music from Cluj Napoca, and the vice-president of the National Choral Association in Romania since 1997.

Caedonia has been part of many national choral festivals, such as, “D.G. Chiriac” festival in Piteşti, “Gheorghe Dima” festival in Braşov, “Iacob Mureşanu” festival in Blaj, “I.D. Chirescu” festival in Constanţa, “Ciprian Porumbescu” festival in Suceava, the Festival of Sacred Music “We Praise Thee” in Orăştie, and “Ion Danielescu” festival in Ploieşti.

After 1990, the choir has performed international tours in Austria, Germany and USA, and has received the title of Member of Honor of Karntner Sangerburd, Austria and of the National Choral Association in Romania.

In forming the repertoire, the choir has chosen pre-classical, classical, and romantic works, first auditions from the Romanian choral repertoire, folkloric adaptations, religious pieces including the Orthodox Liturgy, and Christmas carols. The reference points that contributed to the choice and approach of the repertoire, the Requiem by W.A Mozart – interpreted in 1970, and Missa in C Major by L.Van Beethoven – interpreted in 1997 mirror the choir's natural performance and excellence.

In December 2007, the Chamber Choir Caedonia has performed a tour on the East Coast of the United States of America, on its quest to share – with the Romanians (and not only them) who live there – the joy of the ancient Romanian Christmas traditions and carols, and the honor of being representatives of Sibiu, the Europe's 2007 Capital of Culture.

This year is an anniversary year for the Chamber Choir Caedonia – 40 years of musical excellence. With the blessing of Archibishop Nathaniel, Archbishop pf Detroit and the Romanian Orthodox church of North America and Canada, the Choir will again visit and share with other Romanian-American Communities throughout the U.S. the great joy of the Nativity and the Romanian Caroling Tradition.

Description

Protection Church (also known as "St. Mary Orthodox Church") is an Orthodox Christian parish in Fairfax County, Virginia, dedicated to the use of English in all of our worship services. We are a congregation in the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America (ROEA), an Archdiocese of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), which received its canonical independence (autocephaly) from the Patriarchate of Moscow in 1970. Our hierarch is His Eminence Archbishop Nathaniel (Popp), who resides at the Episcopate headquarters (affectionately known as the Vatra - Romanian for "hearth") in Grass Lake, Michigan.

Our parishioners are a diverse, hospitable, downright friendly bunch, drawn from many religious, ethnic, and professional backgrounds. For example, about one-fourth of our adult membership has Romanian ancestry; roughly 35% run the gamut of other historic Orthodox homelands or ancestries (Greek, Russian, Arab, Ukrainian, Eritrean, etc.), and nearly 40% are converts from other faith groups or religions. We revel in the multi-ethnic, pan-Orthodox flavor of our community!
